| The Star Rating in South Africa works a little bit differently than the star rating used in Europe and the Americas. Stars are awarded only at request by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA).
The TGCSA assess an establishment’s rating depending on which of the nine categories it falls into. These categories include bed and breakfast (B&B), guest houses, hotels, lodges, country houses, backpacker hostels, caravan/camping grounds, self catered accommodation and venues for meetings or special events.
The criteria to award stars differ on many levels in each of the nine categories. Generally speaking a guest at any rated establishment can expect some measure of the following service:
One Star
Modest quality in the overall standard of furnishings, service and guest care.
Clean, comfortable and functional accommodation.
Two Stars
Good quality in the overall standard of furnishings, service and guest care.
Guests should expect at least a continental breakfast.
Three Stars
Very good quality in the overall standard of furnishings, service and guest care.
Guests should expect a cooked breakfast with some variety.
Towels and some bathroom requirements catered for.
Four Stars
Superior comfort and quality with a high standard of furnishings service and guest care.
Guests should expect meal service at main meals of the day.
Major bathroom amenities catered for.
Five Stars
Exceptional quality and luxurious accommodation matching international standards.
Highest standard of furnishings, flawless service and meticulous guest care.
Guests should expect 24-hour meal service of a high quality.
A variety of amenities should be available (laundry, bathroom items, etc.)
